The Triad Of Wellbeing
The three sides of the triad of wellbeing - emotions, biochemistry and structure (also known as mind/body/spirit) represent a holistic view of health and wellness. The elements are interconnected, with the potential to either support or destabilise each other. It is not possible to be 'sick' in only one part of you as the whole is always affected.
One of the most significant implications of this is that the source of ill health in many cases is more complex than it first appears. A holistic approach, where imbalances in all areas of beingness are addressed, is necessary for a complete recovery to take place.
Unwellness In Relation To The Triad Of Wellbeing
Structural Trauma
What is it?
Structural trauma refers to imbalance of the musculo-skeletal system.
What Causes it?
Causes include physical trauma to the cranium/jaw/upper neck or umbilical scar at birth and accident or injury throughout life. Poor posture caused by things such as ill fitting shoes, ill conceived school seating or car seats can also lead to structural trauma as can poor working conditions such as standing or sitting too much as these things also negatively effect posture.
What does treatment involve?
Re-alignment of the joints of the feet, pelvis, spine, neck, cranium, hands and balancing of associated muscles and tendons.
How can structural trauma impact the other elements of triad of wellbeing?
Examples Of How Structural Trauma Can Impact Biochemical Trauma:
A common example of this is Pre- Menstrual pain or disturbed menstrual cycle. These conditions are generally associated with hormonal issues which come under the umbrella of Biochemical Trauma, yet the root cause of these problems is very often a misaligned pelvis and also a misaligned cranium due to birth trauma. Re-balncing of this Structural Trauma frequently results in complete relief from these symptoms.
Examples Of How Structural Trauma Can Impact Emotional Trauma:
Chronic, severe musculo-skeletal pain, a Structural Trauma, can have a marked negative impact on emotional wellbeing and stability, both in a direct way as a result of the pain itself and also indirectly due to associated life changes such as loss of work or inability to play with one's children. Effective balancing of this Structural Trauma will also alleviate the Emotional Trauma because of this inter-relationship.

Biochemical Trauma
What is it?
Biochemical trauma refers to imbalance of the hormonal, immune or digestive system.
What Causes it?
Causes include environmental toxins, heavy metal poisoning, vaccination intolerance, airborne and food allergies, highly refined carbohydrate diet, food additives and colourings, medication, smoking, caffeine and alcohol.
What does treatment involve?
Nutritional supplements (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, digestive enzymes) , herbs, dietary changes, aerobic exercise.
How can Biochemical Trauma impact the other elements of triad of wellbeing?
Examples Of How Biochemical Trauma Can Impact Structural Trauma:
Biochemical imbalances can lead to osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (structural trauma). For example, osteoarthritis of the spine will originate in poor protein digestion as well as in structural problems - because of protein not being full broken down into long chain and short chain amino acids, the body is unable to use these amino acids to re-build healthy muscle, ligament, joint and tendon tissue.
Examples Of How Biochemical Trauma Can Impact Emotional Trauma:
Excess oestrogen and low progesterone due to environmental factors (Biochemical Trauma) often leads to very severe mood swings in women (Emotional Trauma). This imbalance is simple to approach and can bring considerable relief to affected women who often previously felt completely out of control of their extreme emotional symptoms.

Emotional Trauma
What is it?
Emotional trauma refers to emotional and psychological wounds and complexes.
What Causes it?
Emotional pain suffered at a young age, loss and grief throughout life, fear, feelings of insecurity or inadequacy, loneliness, anxiety.
What does treatment involve?
Talk therapy to uncover and release emotional issues from the past.
How can Emotional Trauma impact the other elements of the triad of wellbeing?
Examples Of How Emotional Trauma Can Impact Biochemical Trauma:
Unresolved issues buried in the psyche (Emotional Trauma) can manifest in a variety of conditions generally associated with Biochemical Trauma such as psoriasis, eczema and stomach ulcers. Re-balancing of the Emotional Trauma through talk therapy can often bring significant relief from the physical symptoms.
Examples Of How Emotional Trauma Can Impact Structural Trauma:
Examples of this dynamic at work are chronic back pain, which can often mask unexpressed anger, Chronic sinus pain, which can mask frustrations with one's partner and chronic headaches which can manifest as a result of work and relationship stress as well as other unresolved emotional issues. In all of these situations, Emotional Trauma is having a knock on effect on the triad of wellbeing, and creating Structural Trauma. Approaches to relieve the underlying emotional causes of these conditions can often bring significant relief from symptoms.

The Triad Of Wellbeing And You
I have touched on the basics of the triad of wellbeing and given a few examples which I hope give some indication of the ways the interrelationship between structure, biochemistry and emotions can offer profound insights into the origin of ill health as well as how to address it.
However, the true immensity and complexity of the implications of this simple model of holistic health is quite astounding - in all my years of practice it has never ceased to amaze me how deeply buried the true origins of a person's symptoms can be and how the innate wisdom of the body and soul responds so readily when the right 'solution' to its imbalance is provided.
If you are reading this and you, or someone you care for is suffering in any way, even if you can't put your finger on exactly what the problem is other than you or they are 'not right', please do contact me to discuss your situation. If there is one thing that stands in the way of people being truly well it is so often that they have accepted ill health as their lot in life - don't settle for anything less than the complete wellbeing you deserve! I can help you get there.
